I have a Burt’s Bees soap box in my second desk drawer. It’s my God Box. When I find myself angsting over an issue, something seemingly unresolvable, I write the subject (or person’s name) on a slip of paper and insert it into my God Box. I can’t do anything further with it, so I give it up to Divine Intervention.
Yesterday, my younger daughter was describing some challenges going on at her new job. After she listed a few I asked, “Can I show you something?” I brought her into my office and took out my God Box. “Let’s see what’s in here.” I couldn’t remember the last time I added an entry, so I was as intrigued at the prospect of opening Pandora’s box as she was.
We both ended up laughing as slip after slip said the same thing: Filling my Arts Forum slots (my first Mastermind Group back in 2005), filling Arts Forum II, filling my Spring Mastermind Group, filling my Summer Retreat not to mention the names of various people who had paid too little or too much attention to me. The groups filled or didn’t fill. The relationships grew or ended. It all passed by, and I’m still thriving, which is why we laughed so hard. What I was left with was, “And I thought that was so important!”
What I love about my God Box is that it’s a place to go when my own best thinking dries up. Somewhere to dump the stuff I can’t do anything about. I’ll market like crazy, pick up the phone, send out “early bird” messages and “last chance” ones and stuff will happen or not. I do believe that what works is what’s meant to be. I do the footwork and let go of the results. So far, it’s been working just fine.
Anything you need to let go of today?

Hi Jane,
What a wonderful concept. I love that. It’s a great way to visually and physically “let go” of the stress. I’m going to create my own God box thanks to you, Jane.
I appreciate you!

I used to do something like this years ago but had completely forgotten about it until I read your post.

I LOVE IT! I think I’m going to make a few pretty God Boxes to give as gifts for friends who I know will appreciate them AND make one for myself!
I’m reminded of a quote from John Quincy Adams: “Duty is ours. Results are God’s.”

I have a beautiful God Box that I wrapped in fun paper and put a flip flop memo pad on top of it (my live at the beach vision, always there!), and I haven’t opened it up recently to see what it was that I was needing to let go of. This would be a good time as we head into the holidays, because I love to let peace and gratitude be my guide at a very hectic time!

Love the flip flop memo reminder! Everyone has such original ways of creating their own repository. I’m so glad to have your addition here, Diane. Thanks!

I’ve heard of this before in just letting God take it, but not in actually writing it down and giving it to God. Great idea. Maybe it will help me sleep!

Jane you are brilliant for bringing up the issues that need to be reckoned with in order for growth and healing. your messages are so right on girl !! The power of the written word i s only reinforced with an equally powerful visual exercise and can be done practically anywhere except driving! during my mediatation time i visualize my hands ‘handing’ over my specific burden from my higher consciousness thru my open chakras to god. (or your higher power) Or sometimes i visualize tossing my burdens to the wind(perhaps living on an island has helped me to foster that exercise!) with a gesture of release and freedom which conjures up inner trust and a knowingness thru a deeply connected pipeline that is my spring or well of love. then i become still and LISTEN for the word or become SENSITVE to the omens that come to me within hours and days. Then i take action thru knowingness and gratitude as doors open to the next room in my journey. that my friend is truly a mystical connection and has sustained me for close to 30 years each and every day.

Hi Jane:
I read all three of your blog posts that came through in the email I received yesterday, and found each one of them valuable! Thanks for the reminder about the God Box – I have one as well, but haven’t used it for awhile. I’ve also heard it called a “God Can,” as in – maybe I can’t, but God can – for all the myriad of things that are beyond our control! A wonderful thing to pull out for our New Year’s hopes and dreams…

Thanks Jane,
What a great ritual to help let go of expectations. Being an entrepreneur seems a to be a constant lesson that trying to make something happen a certain way is often beyond our control. I have learned to just put forth the effort and then have faith to let God bring the results. It often seems the things I struggle with and put the most time into weren’t worth the effort, but then sometimes months or even years later something just effortlessly comes my way that is somehow mysteriously connected to what went before- God’s grace. I did an illustration 10 years ago and it never sold. This fall it sold as a cover illustration for a magazine in Russia.

@ Barbara and Katie
I’ve heard them called God Can’s, too, and welcome everyone to use any variations on this theme. The big point here, which you both acknowledge is the letting stuff go and turning it over.
A Russian magazine cover! Wow!
