It all started when I noticed that my book Soul Proprietor had a different jacket representing it on amazon.com. Then I saw that it was no longer ranked and that copies didn’t seem to be available except through resellers. Odd, I thought. What’s up? When I called to order more copies from the publisher, it was days before I got any response. Weird.
The publisher had changed hands twice since it was originally published in 2001 when Crossing Press had made the deal with me. They were subsequently bought by Ten Speed Press who is now owned by Random House. My one title was lost in the shuffle. After several weeks of phone calls and emails I was told that my book was not going to be carried on their lists anymore.
Rather than being upset or depressed, I was actually elated. I am anxious to reprint it myself, update a few of the lessons and change its look. That’s one of my goals for 2010.
Today I signed for and picked up the express mail envelope containing the final document from Ten Speed Press. The rights have officially reverted to me. Not sure many authors are happy when such a thing happens, but I am.

Way to go! I’ll take a copy when it’s back from redux- signed, sealed, delivered.
Uh huh.

Hi Jane-
Your book “Sole Proprietor” was given to me as a graduation present of sorts by my career consultant, Nancy Collamer (JobsandMoms.com), after I had completed a life changing course with her 2 years ago. Your book was such an inspiration to me, and I still pick it up know and then to stay focused on being a “lifestyle entrepreneur”. I am a single mom who is constantly trying to balance being a full time parent and having my own business, so your insights have been very helpful and comforting to me.
I’m so happy that you will be updating your book soon so I will have an excuse to read it in its entirety again….and again and again and again!
With admiration and appreciation,
Paige Windle

Jane,
Good for you! Sounds like a wise move.
I think the first cover is MUCH stronger. I don’t care for the new cover’s watered down colors on the eggs. Looks more like a theology book about Easter, then an empowering book about creativity!

Hi Jane,
Glad to hear everything unfolded in perfect order with your Soul Proprietor book and you now have the rights to do with it as you would like. It is a good feeling to have this freedom and to make whatever changes you want to without needing the approval of the publishing company.
Wishing you much success with your book going forward.
Love,
Janet

@Lennie Rose
Hold that thought! I’d love to have this available by Spring 2010.
@Paige
Delighted to hear that Nancy Collamer gave you my book. She’s an admired colleague. I’m glad we’re in touch via my blog so that you’ll know when the new volume is ready.
@Linda
Thanks so much for the support and encouragement!
@Gini
I entirely agree. The “new” one is actually the first one the publisher showed me almost 10 years ago. I HATED it! Felt exactly the way you described–that it looked like a religious text. I had to fight for the way it actually appeared. I love having the option of full control (and full responsibility).
@Janet
I appreciate this from someone who has been through this process so thoroughly on her own!

Great Things come to Great People! Glad you have your rights back. I went looking for my copy, it did make it to the new office. Can you believe it, I got the copy back in 2001 at the conference in Virginia Beach! Hot off the press. I’ll be looking forward to an update.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Regaining your rights means you can do so much more with it, expand it out to other products, etc. Congratulations on taking back control of your book!
