During the self-intros at Monday night’s Artsy Girls fest, Mindy Green used part of her ‘brag’ time to read us a poem she wrote honoring Jinny Avery who sadly passed away last week at the age of 99. Instead of celebrating Jinny’s 100th birthday as had been previously planned for September 30, there will be a service remembering her instead.
Here’s the tribute that Mindy read to us:
Jinny is all aglow
At the piano
Fingers balancing effort and ease
A smile on her face so happy to please
We will miss her humble way
And her ability to say
The perfectly knit word
The colorful clothes
She was not only a peach,
But more so, a rose.
One of the things that makes Artsy Girls so special is the connections our members have made with each other. Because of this network, Liz and Mindy became good friends, and Liz hired Mindy to paint portraits of her children. These were hanging in Liz’s studio where we had our meeting.
Incidentally, I was a juror at the Westchester Crafts Show many years ago, selected Liz as the top prize winner and also invited her to be a part of the Artsy Girls. I had not formally met her before, but it was the start of a beautiful friendship.
