Thanks for your thoughtful comment and example of how you're using this idea. I find it helpful to read about your 'system' for dealing with such demands.

@Abby
Love the Maxwell quote! Thanks, Abby!

I totally agree with not exceeding one's speed limits! Boundaries are the best things a busy person can have and saying NO is a great way to start creating them. I like another quote from John Maxwell: "Don't let your mouth overload your back!" Good advice for everyone.

Thank you so much for this post. One thing that has helped me set my own personal speed limit, was learning that I have the right to say "I need time to make a decision."

Most people want a response/decision immediately -- which used to mean I'd say Yes to things before I had a chance to really think about how I was going to included this new task (big or small). It felt out of control. I now say I need time to check my calendar and I will respond by a certain date. If they absolutely cannot wait even an hour for a response then I usually tell them the answer has to be No.

It's been hard to implement, my default is to say Yes, but it's a good phrase to slow down the conversation.

This comment embodies the power of reaching out and expressing what's inside of you. You have a way of expressing things that compels others to take action. Quite a gift. I was so honored by YOUR email a couple of years ago that, of course, I wanted to meet you too. Thanks for sharing this.

Well, mine isn't a story of self-praise (not that I'm lacking for those like your humble friend Maggie), but one of authentic networking. When my son, Alex, was born - naturally, easily, beautifully in water - I felt compelled to reach out to the author of the book I credited for opening my eyes to an informed, empowering birth. Her name is Henci Goer. I looked her up online and wrote her a long, grateful email, telling her I felt she deserved to hear of just one more life she completely changed for the better. (Little did I know an entire new career would also spin off from the experience.) Henci replied almost immediately with a lovely "you're most welcome" sort of response. Here's the incredible part. Four years later, I planned a home/waterbirth for our daughter. I hired a midwife from Milford to attend the birth. Just by pure coincidence, my midwife was close friends/associates with Henci (who lives on the West coast) and was in the process of co-authoring Henci's next book with her. To put one final serendipitous touch on the story, literally the day after my daughter was born, Henci flew into town to meet with my midwife, and they both came to visit us in our home to see our new baby. The very author - an icon! - who led me to consider a natural birth was standing in our bedroom the day after our second natural birth. For me, this was surreal.

Come to think of it, Jane, I reached out to another excellent author two years after that, and she has since become a most treasured friend as a result. (Any idea who? Hmmm...) Signed, Soul Proprietor Cynthia Overgard xo
